2013 Coaches
Mike Roberts – Head Coach
Coach Roberts returns to Cotuit for his tenth consecutive season in 2013. During his coaching tenure in the Cape League, which includes 2 seasons in Wareham in 1984 and 2000 where both teams made the play-offs, Coach Roberts has lead his team to the play-offs in 6 of the 9 seasons in Cotuit. The 2010 trip to the play-offs culminated in the Kettleers winning the 2010 Cape Cod League Championship and bringing the Arnold Mycock trophy back to Cotuit.
Last season, the 2012 team won the President’s Trophy for the best record in the league at 30-14. This was the first time the Kettleers had reached 30 wins under Coach Roberts’ leadership.
From 1978 through 1998, Roberts was the head coach at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and then went on to UNC-Asheville, where he coached in the spring of 2000. All totaled, Roberts’ teams have made nine NCAA post-season and two College World Series appearances. Five times his teams captured the ACC Regular Season Championship and four times the ACC Tournament Championship. Eight of Roberts’ former players have been first round draft picks Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. Sixteen of his former players at UNC have played in Major League Baseball. His lifetime collegiate coaching record is 850-450-3. His greatest individual coaching success is his own son, Brian Roberts, currently the two time all-star 2nd baseman for the Baltimore Orioles.
Walt Weiss, who played for Coach Roberts at UNC-CH and went on to become the American League Rookie of the year in 1988, is the new manager of the Colorado Rockies. Five of Coach Roberts’ former players are now collegiate head coaches, many are assistants, and several others work in professional baseball or are professional baseball athlete’s advisors. “I am pleased so many of the excellent student/athletes I have recruited through the years continue to enjoy a career helping young men try to reach their academic, athletic, and career goals.”
Every summer in Cotuit the goal is to win a Cape League Championship. We strive to accomplish this goal with mature college student/athletes from around the nation who embrace practicing and playing at picturesque Elizabeth Lowell Park. Many of the Kettleers players become involved in our wonderful community with activities such as the Cotuit library writing program and the ever growing Kettleers baseball clinics. The athletes provide tremendous leadership to young people during the summer as they are also building close relationships, many which last a lifetime, with their host families.
Prior to managing Wareham to the Western Division regular season title in 2000, Roberts had led Wareham to the same title in 1984. Each of those two seasons, Roberts’ Cape League teams led the entire League in stolen bases and continued this tradition with the 2012 Kettleers. In 2000, Roberts’ Wareham team tied the Cape League all-time single season stolen base record with 134 stolen bases.
In the off-season, Coach Roberts has studied part-time for his Doctorate in Sports Administration at the University of New Mexico, does base stealing clinics, writes, and produces baseball videos. He has written a book on base stealing titled “You Can’t Steal Second Base and Keep Your Foot on First!” published in Dec. 2008 and is completing a 2nd book on base stealing that will be published by Human Kinetics in the fall of 2013. A base stealing video was filmed at beautiful Elizabeth Lowell Park in Cotuit in 2011 and a hitting video was filmed at Lowell Park in 2012. His son Brian, who led the American League in stolen bases in 2007, contributed to the book and the DVD which shows clips of Brian stealing bases for the Orioles.
Mike works for two sports industry leaders during the off-season. His primary position is Director of Baseball Development for SmartKage from Tyngsborough, Mass. SmartKage is the new leader in a high technology evaluation system and reports exact athletic performance levels by sport, age, and system. SmartKage will have these technology systems available to test athletes in approximately 160 amateur hitting facilities across the USA in the next two years. Also, coach consults for Athletes’ Performance driving the Business Development for Baseball with minor league and major league baseball athletes. AP is featured often in publications and on ESPN as the premier athletic training center for Elite Athletes in the USA and around the world.
Brian Scott – Assistant Coach
Brian returns for his fourth year with the Kettleers. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Biology from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. Brian earned three varsity letters as a pitcher with the Tigers. He was an assistant coach in the Duluth East High School baseball program in Duluth, Minnesota during the spring of 2013. Brian has worked at summer baseball camps at DePauw, Chesterton High School, the Training Center Baseball School, and U.S. Baseball Academy in Duluth-Proctor, Minnesota. He spent two years teaching environmental education at the Dunes Learning Center in Northwest Indiana and two years at the N.E.E.D. Collaborative (Seashore Program) in Truro, Massachusetts.
Brian’s hometown is Chesterton, IN.
Trey McCall – Assistant Coach
Trey McCall, Head Baseball Coach at Emory & Henry College since 2005, is the first full-time head coach in the history of the Wasps’ program. In 2012 the Wasps had a breakout season, tying for third in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference after being picked to finish 10th. McCall led E&H to its first ODAC Tournament appearance since 1999 and saw four players named all-conference, earning him ODAC Coach of the Year honors.
A legendary high school baseball catcher and power hitter who was selected 16th in the First Round in the 1985 Major League baseball draft, McCall spent four and a half seasons in the Philadelphia Phillies organization and progressed to the major league spring training camp for the 1988 season.
McCall has a BA in business from E&H and a Masters in PE from East Tennessee State. He resides in Abingdon, VA, with wife Laura and two daughters, Katherine and Elizabeth.
Sean West – Assistant Coach
Sean West finished his fourth season as the assistant baseball coach at Denison University. West’s duties at Denison include working with hitters, infielders, and outfielders, in addition to serving as the assistant recruiting coordinator, and head of baseball operations. West graduated ‘08 from San Diego Christian College with a BA in communication. After graduation, he served as the interim coach for the Hawks in the fall of 2008. West’s sophomore year he was named the NCCAA South Region Player of the Year at Palm Beach Atlantic University and earned NCCAA first-team All-America honors.
In the summer he also serves as the General Manager for the Licking County Settlers of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League. In his three years with the Settlers, the organization finished in 2nd place in 2010, 3rd place in 2011, and in 2012 the Settlers captured their first GLSCL championship. West currently resides in Newark, OH.
Michael Reese – Assistant Coach
Michael Reese is in his first year at Lindenwood University as a strength and conditioning and exercise science graduate assistant. His primary coaching duties involve working with Lindenwood’s baseball, softball, and golf teams. Reese also serves as an assistant instructor in the university’s exercise science department.
Reese comes to Lindenwood University by way of Springfield College in Illinois (now Benedictine University at Springfield) and Truman State University. Reese received an associate in arts degree from Springfield College in Illinois and a B.S. in exercise science from Truman State University while playing for each school’s baseball team.
While fairly new to the coaching scene, Reese has gained some quality experience in the field. He interned with the world-renowned Athletes’ Performance in Phoenix, AZ as a performance specialist. During his time at Athletes’ Performance, Reese had the opportunity to work alongside and learn from some of the top strength and conditioning specialists in the U.S. while training high school, collegiate, and professional athletes. In addition to his time at Athletes’ Performance, Reese has made stops at both of his alma maters where he served a dual role as the teams’ strength and conditioning coach and as an assistant coach.
Reese has obtained NSCA-CSCS, ACSM-HFS, and FMS-L1 certifications and is currently working towards his master’s degree in human performance at Lindenwood University.
