Score/result: Cotuit 15-6 Bourne
Cotuit hitter of the game: Nathan Martorella (California) had another great day for the Cotuit offense, driving in three runs. Martorella’s highlight was a two run homer in the top of the third. The opposite field blast put the Kettleers up 7-0 and put an exclamation point on a four-run inning, and was an impressive display of power from the lefty. Martorella finished the game with three hits, three RBI’s and two runs scored.
Cotuit hit of the game: Just two batters after a questionable call robbed Cotuit of a two run homer, Matt Suggs (UNC-Wilmington) blasted a two run shot of his own to make the game 3-0 in the top of the second. The no-doubt homer cleared the Bourne bullpen and the batting cages in left field. This was the turning point in the contest, as the Kettleers followed Suggs’ lead and kept the hit parade going.
Cotuit pitcher of the game: Quinn Mathews (Stanford) was stunning yet again for Cotuit on Friday, throwing 5+ innings and striking out nine. The Stanford product only surrendered one earned run and worked around five hits to provide Cotuit with a much needed quality start. Mathews’ start set the tone for the rest of the team, as he was efficient and calm for the duration of the outing.
Cotuit: 15 runs/18 hits/2 errors
Bourne: 6 runs/11 hits/1 error
Up next: The Kettleers will face off with the Bourne Braves again tomorrow in game 2 of the series. The game will be played at 4:00 PM at Lowell Park.
