Quick hitter: Free passes doom Cotuit in loss to Brewster

Posted by Katherine Ware
/ July 17, 2021

Score/result: Cotuit 3-7 Brewster

Cotuit hitter of the game: Luke Gold (Boston College) brought the first sign of life for the Kettleers’ offense. The right-handed hitter crushed a no-doubt homer over the left field fence to put Cotuit on the board in the fourth inning. The homer was Gold’s fourth of the year, a team high. He also leads the team in RBI. Gold scored two of the Kettleers’ three runs as he scored in the sixth inning after reaching base on a walk.

Cotuit pitcher of the game: Trevor Kuncl (George Washington) was dominant in his first appearance as a Kettleer. Kuncl entered the game in the fourth inning and stranded the bases loaded with an inning-ending strikeout. He followed the clutch strikeout with back-to-back 1-2-3 innings. Kuncl posted a final line of 2.1 IP, 0 H, 2 BB, 3 K’s, and 0 R.

Cotuit hit of the game: Brett Roberts (Florida State) wasn’t in the starting lineup tonight but still made an impact off the bench. Roberts pinch hit with a runner on second and two outs in the sixth inning. The right-handed hitter snuck a line drive down the right field line for a double to tie the game at two. Roberts is second among current Kettleers with nine RBI.

Key stat: 12. Cotuit’s arms struggled to find the strike zone consistently tonight as they walked twelve batters. Of the seven Brewster runs, four of them reached base on a free pass. Four free passes in the seventh inning led to a four-run Brewster frame.

Cotuit: 3 runs / 9 hits / 1 error

Brewster: 7 runs / 4 hits / 1 error
