Game story: Free passes doom Cotuit in loss at Harwich

Harwich, MA- The Cotuit Kettleers winning percentage fell back to .500 as the fog set over Whitehouse field in Harwich on Tuesday night. The Mariners handed the Kettleers their ninth loss of the season by a score of 6-3. Cotuit couldn’t recover from a big inning in the middle of the game as they produced just five hits and left 10 men on base.

Moments that mattered:

Rogers, Grady make strong first impressions

Dalton Rogers (Southern Miss) made his Cotuit debut against Harwich as he got the start on the bump. After not throwing in live action for nearly two months, Rogers posted a strong outing. He allowed a run in the first inning, but retired the last eight batters he faced. Rogers struck out four batters over three innings. He allowed just two hits and one walk.

Jace Grady (Dallas Baptist) also made his Cotuit debut as he led off and played center field. Grady led off the game with a walk and made it to third on a stolen base and error. He scored the first run of the night on a bases loaded walk. Grady had the Kettleers’ only extra base hit of the night as he smoked a solo home run over the left field fence in the ninth inning. On a quiet offensive night, the outfielder showed that he’ll bring a diverse toolset to the Kettleers’ lineup the rest of the summer.

Free passes doom the Kettleers in the fifth

The Kettleers entered the fifth inning with a 2-1 lead but ran into trouble in the bottom half. After a leadoff single, a hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bases with no outs. The tying run crossed the plate on another walk. Following a strikeout for the first out of the inning, the Mariners took the lead on a wild pitch. Josh Hood made the Kettleers pay for the free passes as he capped the inning with a two-out, two-run single. The single ended up being the game-winning hit, as the Mariners scored four runs on two hits in the inning.

Notables

Rogers: 3 IP, 2 H, 4 K, 1 R

Max Gieg (Boston College): 3 IP, 3 H, 3 K, 1 R

Grady: 1-4, 2 R, 1 HR

Andy Garriola (Old Dominion): 2-3, 2 BB

Up next: The Kettleers will travel back to Wareham on Wednesday for a 6:45 PM first pitch against the Gateman. It will be Cotuit’s second trip to Wareham this week, as they shut out the Gatemen in a 6-0 win on Monday. Wareham and Cotuit are currently tied for second place in the West Division.
