Game story: Cotuit routs Hyannis 13-5

The Cotuit Kettleers went into Monday night’s game against Hyannis with revenge on their minds after last week’s defeat at the hands of the Harbor Hawks. The Kettleers used two five-run innings and some phenomenal pitching to get back in the win column, taking the contest 13-5.

Cotuit (3-4) dominated in every facet of the game, flashing its potential as serious contenders in the CCBL’s West Division. Hyannis (1-6) dropped their fifth straight contest and looked totally outmatched today at Lowell Park.

Moments that mattered:

Cotuit gets on the board early

The Kettleers offense got off to a fast start on Monday, notching five runs on six total hits in the first inning. Cole Cummings (UCSB) led off the game by reaching on an error, and scored quickly on a Brooks Baldwin (UNC Wilmington) infield single. The early onslaught would continue with singles by RJ Schreck (Duke) and Luke Gold (Boston College), the second of which scored Baldwin. After Gold swiped second base, the BC Eagle would fly around the base-paths to score on another base knock by Andy Garriola (Old Dominion). With Garriola on first, Dylan Beavers (California) roped a double down the first base line to keep the hit parade going. With runners on second and third, Brett Roberts (Florida State) continued his torrid stretch by lacing a two-RBI single to center field. The first inning was a breath of fresh air for the Kettleers, and certainly a welcome sight for Coach Roberts. “We got embarrassed by Bourne yesterday” said Roberts “and we needed to come back with a good game tonight”

Smith’s dominant start

Simply put, Jake Smith (Miami) was dealing in his first official start for the Kettleers. After the rain cut his initial start short last Tuesday, Smith made Monday night count. “I was a little rusty in the outing last week, but I came out tonight and felt good” said Smith. With the Miami product running his fastball up to 97 and locating his slider and changeup effectively, the Hyannis lineup had no chance. Smith’s final line was the best by a Cotuit starter this season, as he struck out 10 Hyannis batters in five innings.

The Ketts add five in the fifth

The bottom of the order got things going for the Kettleers in the bottom of the fifth as Roberts and Ryan Ritter (Kentucky) both blooped singles to short right field, putting the pressure on Hyannis with no outs. A Cummings walk would increase the pressure, loading the bases for Baldwin. After a wild pitch that scored Roberts, Baldwin hit a line drive to the fence in deep right that scored both Ritter and Cummings. Schreck would get in on the party, blasting a no doubt home-run to right-field to give Cotuit it’s 13th and final run of the ballgame. “I was just looking for a fastball up. He had missed a few spots earlier so I was just waiting for a good pitch to hit” said Schreck, who was excited that the bats got going again tonight. “It felt great to get the bats hot tonight. Hopefully we can carry that over into tomorrow.”

Notables:

Baldwin 2-4, 2 RBI’s, 4R

Schreck: 2-4, 2 RBI’s, 1R

Roberts: 3-5, 2 RBI, 1R

Smith (1-0): 5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 10K
