COTUIT– Trey Jacobs (UNC Pembroke) arrived on the Cape just under a week ago, but he certainly made his presence felt in Monday’s season-ending loss. In the fourth inning, Cotuit trailed 4-2 to the Gatemen, but that all changed with one swing of the bat.

“I was a little pissed off that they walked [Michael] Toglia to bring me up, made me feel a little disrespected,” said Jacobs. “I was thinking that hopefully I can make them pay for it, and I got the pitch and it worked out.”
At the time, Jacobs’ home run gave Cotuit a 5-4 lead. After Wareham blew the game open in the ninth, Jacobs added another home run, a solo shot to left for his second opposite-field homer of the game.
“I’ve never seen two home runs, in my tenure here, hit opposite field in one game,” said Mike Roberts postgame. “By anyone. That’s pretty tough to do with a wood bat and I can’t do anything but praise him and just say wow.”
Jacobs leaves the Cape with six hits in 16 at-bats and five RBI’s. He will return to UNC Pembroke next season as a draft-eligible player, and Roberts mentioned postgame that he doesn’t expect Jacobs to be around next summer, considering the hitting clinic he was able to put on in just four games.
Toglia adds another HR, multi-hit game
Michael Toglia (UCLA) came into the season widely considered one of the top prospects not just in Cotuit, but across the Cape League. He parlayed that expectation into a season where he hit eight home runs and 24 RBI’s in 38 games.

The hitting threat that Toglia posesses was evident in Cotuit’s first round series with Wareham, where he was walked three times in two games.
His seven home runs during the regular season were just one shy of the league lead. He also ended the season with hits in each of his last three games, and RBI’s in two of the last three.
He will head back to UCLA in the fall, and play this spring with the intention of being selected in the 2019 MLB Draft.
Chaumette comes up with three-hit game in season finale
Raphael Chaumette (Trinity U – TX) had been hitless in his first eight at-bats with Cotuit, but that changed as well on Tuesday.
Chaumette managed to hit a pair of infield singles on Tuesday, showing off his speed in both the second and fifth innings. He would add another single in the seventh for his third hit of the game.
He filled in capably for Duke Ellis (Texas) in the Wareham series, as Ellis was sidelined with an undisclosed ailment. Chaumette heads into his junior year down at Trinity, meaning he is also draft eligible this coming spring.
