Oviedo a bright spot in Bourne

BOURNE – While the Cotuit Kettleers took something of a step back in their 9-3 loss to the Bourne Braves on Monday, one player who took an individual step forward was shortstop Adam Oviedo (TCU).

Shortstop Adam Oviedo (TCU) had two hits against Bourne on July 9

Oviedo was coming off a long layoff, having not appeared since July 5 against Falmouth and not having started since July 3 against Wareham. Since June 20, Oviedo has only 21 at-bats. Oviedo credited his successful return to remaining engaged in games from the bench.

“It’s just staying locked in the game pitch by pitch. Not letting your mind travel. Once you get deeper in the ballgame you want to just gaze off but you.ve got to stay in the game.”

Batting ninth, Oviedo was the only Kettleer with multiple hits and scored one of Cotuit’s three runs. Oviedo was also one of just three Kettleers to not strike out on the night.

“Coach makes the lineup and I was ready to play,” Oviedo said. “He gave me the green light and I was all ready to go.”

Cotuit’s 23rd game put them one game past the halfway point of the season with a record sitting one game under .500. While the team has struggled with consistency over the past few weeks, Oviedo said that the team is keeping things in perspective and not panicking yet.

“It’s baseball,” Oviedo said. “We’ll play again tomorrow. It doesn’t matter what happened today, it’ll be better tomorrow.
