HYANNIS– As the lights flickered on at McKeon Park on Wednesday night, it seemed like anyone’s game to win with the score tied at two in the seventh inning.

But the Harbor Hawks would break it open with a trio of RBI hits as Hyannis (15-8-2, 32 pts) defeated Cotuit (12-12-1, 25 pts) 5-2 at McKeon Park on Wednesday night.

Three straight singles off the bats of Davis Wendzel (Baylor), Matt Barefoot (Campbell), and Pedro Pages (FAU) all produced RBI’s, and served as the difference in a three run seventh for Hyannis. Riley Self (Mississippi State) got the win for Hyannis, while Joey Walsh (BC) took the loss for Cotuit. Dylan Thomas (Hawaii) came on to get the save for the Harbor Hawks.

“We’re better than we were a week ago, but we’re still not playing up to our ability level,” said Coach Roberts after the game. “They scored the first two runs off our mistakes. Give credit to them, Hyannis threw the ball well tonight, and we still have a long way to go to play up to the talent level I think we have.”

The first inning went scoreless, as both teams got runners aboard, but proceeded to strand them. The Harbor Hawks struck first on a wild pitch that scored Tommy Jew (UC Santa Barbara), who reached on a single earlier in the inning.

Thomas Dillard (Ole Miss) tied the game at two with a two-run home run against Hyannis on Wednesday.

Hyannis would double their lead in the fourth, as Todd Lott (Louisiana Lafayette) came around to score on a Will Holland (Auburn) RBI single to make it 2-0 Hyannis.

Cotuit would answer back in a big way in the sixth. After Michael Toglia (UCLA) led off with a single, Thomas Dillard (Ole Miss) stepped up with a two-run homer that barely escaped the glove of right fielder Trevor Hauver (Arizona State), as Dillard tied the game at two with his third home run of the season.

“He’s a Cape League veteran,” said Roberts. “I think his expectations are higher than mine. He definitely wants to be one of the better hitters in the league. I like our offensive lineup.”

Cotuit will be back at home tomorrow, in the first of a home-and-home series with Wareham. The Kettleers are 0-2 against the Gatemen this season. First pitch at Lowell Park is set for 5:00 p.m.
