COTUIT – Notes after the Kettleers 5-4 comeback win over the Firebirds

  • Firebirds’ starter Graeme Stinson (Duke) struck out 12 Kettleers in just five innings. The Orleans bullpen struck out just three in four innings. Prior to Wednesday, Cotuit’s season high was 10 strikeouts in a game Michael Toglia (UCLA) was the only Kettleer who did not strike out on the night.
  • Matt McCourt (Mt. Aloysius) started Cotuit’s comeback with a two-run single in the seventh inning. It was his first hit and first RBI of the season in his first game action since pinch-hitting on opening day against Brewster on June 12.
  • The Kettleers are now 6-0 when scoring five or more runs and 0-3 when scoring fewer than that. They are also 5-0 against the East division and 1-3 against the West.
  • A statistic to put Peyton Burdick’s (Wright State) incredible opening day in context: With every team having played at least eight games, Burdick remains in the top five in the league in both home runs and RBI, despite not tallying a homer or RBI since opening day.

  • Catcher Rey Pastrana (Marshall) has just 11 at-bats in three games on the season. Despite that he is second on the team with three doubles.
  • Despite batting just .190 so far on the season, second baseman Corey Wood (Coastal Carolina) is fifth on the team with a .414 OBP.
  • In their last six games, the Kettleers have scored three or more runs in an inning eight times. They did it in the third, eighth and ninth innings Tuesday in Hyannis, and twice on Sunday against Y-D. They did it again in the pivotal seventh inning, plating five runs.
  • Reliever Deacon Medders (Alabama) is one of two qualifying pitchers in the league with an ERA of 0.00. The other is Falmouth’s Ian Koch (Western Illinois).
  • Outfielder Will Robertson (Creighton) went 2-for-3 against Orleans on Wednesday. He is now third in the league with a .394 average and is tied for the league lead with 13 hits. He stands alone on the leaderboard with four doubles.
  • Barnstable rivals Hyannis and Cotuit are 1-2 in the league’s attendance rankings. The Harbor Hawks average about 1,500 fans a game while the Kettleers average about 1,100. No other team averages over 1,000.
