WAREHAM — Left-handed pitcher Zane Collins (Wright State) threw a gem against the Wareham Gatemen in Cotuit’s 2-0 win on Monday night. Collins went the full nine innings, allowing just six hits one walk while striking out eight batters. Collins earned his second win of the season and lowered his ERA to 0.93

This marked the first complete game in the Cape League since 2015, when Hyannis pitcher Devin Smeltzer threw a no-hitter on June 20, 2015.

At Wright State, Collins posted a 2.83 ERA with 77 strikeouts in 92.1 innings pitched.

Notes:

  • With the shutout under his belt, Collins now ranks second among qualified pitchers in the league in ERA. The only qualified pitcher with a better mark is Wareham right-hander Justin Montgomery (California Baptist), who has yet to allow an earned run in 17 innings pitched.
  • On the other side of the shutout was Cotuit catcher Ivan Gonzalez (West Virginia), making just his third start of the summer behind the plate. Gonzalez was added to the roster on June 16, but missed the first ten days with pinkeye. Now healthy, he’s expected to serve as a backup catcher to regular starter Gian Martellini (Boston College).
  • The Kettleers were without centerfielder Greyson Jenista (Wichita State) for the second straight game dealing with a lower leg injury. He was hitting .304 in his first 16 games of the summer. Miles Lewis (Michigan) started in centerfield again and went 1-4.
  • First baseman Michael Toglia (UCLA) was also out of the lineup for a second straight day with a leg injury. Toglia was hitting .152 over his first ten games, but four of his five hits went for extra bases. Thomas Dillard (Ole Miss) got the start at first base in his place. Dillard played mostly outfield for Ole Miss, but was seeing most of his time at catcher for the Kettleers.
  • Outfielder Brett Kinneman (NC State) went 2-4 on Monday, raising his season on-base percentage to .417, the ninth-best mark in the league.
  • The Kettleers offense struck out nine times on Monday, and that increases their season total to 166, the second-highest total in the league.
  • The Kettleers host the Falmouth Commodores on Tuesday, while the Gatemen will visit the Bourne Braves.
