Cotuit (8-8) took an 11-0 beating at the hands of Wareham (7-9) in the two teams’ first matchup this season.

Game Notes

  • This marks the second time Cotuit has been shut out this season. The first came against Orleans on June 25.
  • Cotuit is now 1-2 in their last three games, with each loss being an 11-run blowout. Falmouth is the only other team to lose two games by double-digits, and they are the only team to lose two games by 11 or more runs.
  • This was the team’s first game without Griffin Conine (Duke), who is in Omaha for the College Home Run Derby. Without Conine in the lead-off spot, the team registered a season-low 3 hits.
  • This game marked the second time this season that the Kettleers didn’t draw a single walk.
  • Through Cotuit’s first 10 games, the team committed just 3 errors. The lowest total in the Cape League. Through the team’s last 6 games, they’ve committed 10 errors. They now rank 4th in the league in fielding percentage.
  • The two sides only played 8 innings Friday evening. In an 8-inning game the minimum number of plate appearances a team can have is 24. Against Wareham, Cotuit had 25.
  • Three different Kettleers’ pitchers gave up three hits to Wareham. Cotuit only had three hits all game.
  • For the second time in three games, Cotuit had more errors than runs (13-2 loss to Orleans).
  • Cotuit is 4-4 at home and 4-4 on the road.
  • Entering Friday’s action, Wareham starter Miller Hogan (Saint Louis) had yet to record a strikeout in two appearances this season. In five innings against Cotuit he struck out six batters.
  • After having three players in the top five in the Cape League batting title race last week, Cotuit now has no one in the top five. Griffin Conine ranks first for the Kettleers in eighth place with a .356 average.
  • Despite hitting .333, John Cresto (Santa Clara) leads the Cape League with 23 strikeouts in 54 at-bats.
  • The Kettleers have fallen to 4th in the league in runs scored and 5th in hits after leading the league in both last week.
  • For the first time all season, Cotuit has a negative run differential, -2. They’ve scored 77 runs and yielded 79.

Chandler Avant (Alabama) was one of three players to get a hit in Cotuit’s 11-0 shutout loss,

The team returns to action tomorrow night on the road against Falmouth. Cotuit is 1-0 this season against the Commodores, beating them 10-0 in the second game of the year.
