At the plate

Cotuit (4-15) posted seven hits Saturday in its 3-2 loss to Wareham (10-8-1) at Spillane Field in Wareham.

Jason Delay (Vanderbilt) launched a second inning solo home run to left centerfield, sailing over Wareham left fielder Alex Destino’s (South Carolina) head. The solo shot, which put Cotuit ahead early, 1-0, was Delay’s first homer of the season, and Cotuit’s third in as many games.

In the top of the eighth inning, after back to back hits from Quinn Brodey (Stanford) and Greyson jenista (Wichita State), Cal Stevenson (Arizona) scored Brodey on a sac-fly to deep left field. The sac-fly put Cotuit within one at 3-2, but that is where the score would stay.

On the mound

Colton Hock (Stanford) got the start for Cotuit Saturday. The right hander lasted six innings, allowing three runs on nine hits and two walks. All three runs were earned. Hock also struck out two, but got the loss.

He was relieved in the seventh inning by Josh Roberson (UNC – Wilmington). Roberson threw the rest of the game, allowing no runs on no hits, walking two and striking out four in the no-decision appearance.

In the field

Cotuit had two errors Saturday, both of which occurred on the same play, and were both charged to Alonzo Jones (Vanderbilt)

In the bottom of the third inning, Wareham slugger Colton Shaver (BYU) nailed a ground ball to second base. Alonzo Jones bobbled the ball, then rushed the throw to Ryan Hagan (Mercer) at shortstop.

As the ball sailed over Hagan’s head, two runs scored, putting Wareham up 2-1, and giving the Gatemen their first lead of the night; a lead they would have for the rest of the game.

Cotuit has lost six of its seven one-run games this season. The 1-6 record in one-run games is the worst record in one-run games in the Cape League so far in 2016.
