Behind a five-run fifth inning and a home run in the bottom of the sixth, Cotuit (3-14) topped Chatham (8-9), 8-2, Wednesday night at Lowell Park in Cotuit.

Down 2-1 to the Anglers in the bottom of the fifth inning, Cotuit loaded the bases with no outs on the board. With the bags juiced, Alonzo Jones Jr. (Vanderbilt) smashed a bases-clearing triple into deep right-center field. The hit, Jones’ eighth of the season, put Cotuit on top 4-2.

Jones then scored on the very next pitch, a wild-pitch that skipped past Anglers’ catcher Gunnar Troutwine (Wichita State). The run moved to score to 5-2 in favor of Cotuit.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, with Greyson Jenista (Wichita State) on first and no outs on the board, Jack Klein (Stanford) rocked a two-run home run into deep left field. Chatham left fielder Stuart Fairchild (Wake Forest) took two steps towards the ball, then watched as it sailed into the trees. The home run put the Kettleers on top of Chatham, 8-2, where the score would remain for the rest of the game.

Cal Becker (Sonoma State) started on the mound for Cotuit, allowing one run on four hits in two and two-thirds innings pitched. He was relieved by Connor Simmons (Georgia Southern) who allowed a run on two hits in two and one-third innings on the mound. Simmons earned the the win.

The closing combination of Alec Byrd (Florida State), Ryan Rigby (Mississippi State) and Eddie Muhl (George Washington) finished the remainder of the game for Cotuit, allowing no runs in the final four innings of the contest.

Jenista reached base in four of his five plate appearances Wednesday, tallying two hits and scoring three times in the win. Cal Stevenson (Arizona) reached base three times, walking in three of his five plate appearances and scoring one run.

Cotuit tallied seven hits in the win, Chatham posted eight. Cotuit had one error.
