HARWICH — The Kettleers opened their season with a loss at Whitehouse Field on Friday, falling to the Harwich Mariners, 8-3. Cotuit’s Keith Rogalla (Creighton) got the nod on the mound, but gave up eight runs — four earned — and seven hits in four innings of work. Harwich’s starter, Hunter Williams (North Carolina), lasted five innings and gave up just two runs and struck out five batters.
After Cotuit went down in order to start the game, the Mariners got the scoring started with three runs in the bottom of the first. An error and single put two runners on base. Then Austin Filiere (MIT) blasted a two-out three-run homer over the left field fence.
The Kettleers got two runs back in the top of the second, but a four-run bottom of the second for the Mariners spoiled the Cotuit response. An error started the inning and an eventual bases loaded triple by Logan Farrar (VCU) plated three runs.
Cotuit sent 21 different players onto the field throughout the game and six errors for the Kettleers — compared to just four hits and three runs scored — were too much to overcome.
