Pitching and defense are starting to look better
The Kettleers allowed just three runs Wednesday night, and surrendered no errors for the first time this season, in their victory over the Whitecaps. Pitching-wise, the Kettleers used just two pitchers, David Gerics (Pomona-Pitzer) and Ross Achter (Toledo).
“Gerics and Achter really picked us up tonight,” head Coach Mike Roberts said. “I think they did a great job.”
Roberts also said that the Kettleers were limited in the pen Wednesday, but the one-two punch of Gerics and Achter made sure he only had to make one call to the bullpen over the course of the game.
Jack Klein made his presence known
Klein (Stanford) made a number of plays in centerfield Wednesday night, including a diving play on a hard line drive. Klein made the catch, rolling over himself as he secured the ball. This clean performance in centerfield comes after a couple of Cotuit games which saw outfielders struggle with fielding.
Coach Roberts said after Tuesday’s game that outfielders should know how to field ball and keep it in front of them, and Klein showed Wednesday night that he is more than capable in that position.
Klein was also strong offensively, singling and walking in the victory.

Alonzo Jones has been activated
Jones, the speedy infielder out of Vanderbilt, spent Wednesday’s game in the stands with his father, Alonzo Jones Sr. After the game, Jones came onto the field and got involved with the postgame speech from Roberts.
This morning, Jones was officially activated.
The middle-infielder is one of the fastest players in the NCAA, setting the record for the fastest 60-yard dash time at Perfect Game (6.17 seconds). Jones will likely see himself appear in the lineup either Thursday against Orleans or Friday at Yarmouth-Denis.
