Summary

The Kettleers (16-23) scored four runs in the sixth inning, recovering from a shaky start, to beat the Falmouth Commodores (13-25-1) , 6-1 at Lowell Park on Tuesday. Matt Milburn (Wofford) gave up a run in the first, but rebounded to throw five strong innings. Nick Lewis (Baylor) polished off the last four innings, retiring 12 batters in order.

Cotuit is now two and a half games ahead of the Commodores and tied with Wareham (15-22-2) for third place in the West.

At the plate

Will Haynie (Alabama) went 2-for-4 with two singles and drove in three runs. Haynie is 10-for-24 with nine runs batted in in the last six games and has an RBI in each of the last six games. He smacked a grounder the opposite way in the sixth to cap the Kettleers’ scoring output in the inning.

Spencer Gaa (Bradley) and Jeren Kendall (Vanderbilt) both went 2-for-5 with an RBI.

In the field

Spencer Gaa started the game in right field, but after a few offensive substitutions and defensive adjustments he was moved to third in the top of the seventh. Gaa started the season at third, but has since been moved to second base, right field and even the designated hitter spot.

In the seventh, he fielded a ground ball toward the bag with his backhand and fired out to first. In the dugout, head coach Mike Roberts yelled praise and words of encouragement to him.

The quote

“I feel like in the past week the guys have really come together. You can really see us bonding and as you can see, we’ve won three straight so it’s big going into the playoffs and especially tonight getting a big win over our division rivals.” — Will Haynie

Up next

The Kettleers will travel to Hyannis to play the Harbor Hawks on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at McKeon Park.
