Last-Place Squad Silences Cotuit’s Bats in Make-Up Game on the Road

BOURNE, MA — The Kettleers had a chance to yesterday afternoon to widen their grip on first-place in the Western Division, but instead left the Braves’ new field complex at Upper Cape Regional Technical High School saddled with a 2-0 shutout loss.

Cotuit (21-10-1) was unable to produce any offense against the 6-23-2 Braves as it mustered only three hits throughout the game.

Cotuit fell behind early as the Braves jumped on Cotuit starter Graham Godfrey (College of Charleston, 2BB, 1 K, 4H) to score two runs in the second inning. Godfrey allowed a walk and then overthrew the second baseman on a sacrifice bunt to put runners in scoring position with no outs. Cat Everett (Tulane, 1 for 3, 1 RBI) and Andy Goff (Wake Forest, 1 for 2, 1 RBI) took advantage of the situation as both singled to bring in one run, giving the Braves a two run lead that Cotuit was never able to overcome

Godfrey, who settled down after relinquishing those two runs, and reliever Dan Runzler (UC Riverside, 3BB, 1K, 2H) kept the Braves off balance the rest of the game, giving their offence the opportunity it needed to make a comeback. Unfortunately, Cotuit’s offence was never able to take advantage of that opportunity as Braves starter Mickey Storey (Florida Atlantic, 3BB, 7K, 3H) completely stalled Cotuit’s attack, only allowing more than one Cotuit player to reach base in an inning twice. Storey picked up his first win of the season by keeping Cotuit’s attack under wraps, and then gave the ball over to his closer Andrew Carignan (UNC, 0BB, 1K, 0H) to secure for the Braves their sixth victory of the season.

Carignan was able to perform his job admirably as he put down the Kettleers one-two-three, including a strikeout of Reese Havens (South Carolina, 0 for 3), to pick up his third save of the season. Bourne visits Lowell Park in Cotuit today at 5:00 p.m.
