COTUIT, MA — The race for a playoff spot and the 2005 Western Division title just got tighter.
With a big, 6-4 win last night versus the Harwich Mariners last night at Lowell Park, the Kettleers ended the evening two points behind second place Wareham and three points behind first place Bourne.
The Cape League has the day off today (Tuesday, July 26).
With the win over Harwich last night, Cotuit upped its record to 18-15-2, but the win did not come without some nail biting.
Ahead, 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning after a Bryan Harris RBI-single, Cotuit watched as Harwich tied the game in the top of the fifth, then went ahead, 2-1 in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, though, Cotuit plated three runs by going the “small ball” route with three consecutive bunts and a couple of Harwich defensive miscues. Cotuit remained ahead, 4-2, after seven complete. Cotuit added to its lead in the bottom of the eighth with two more runs on a Sean Gaston double (3-4, 2 RBI) to make it 6-2.
Harwich came back in the top of the ninth with two runs but it was too little, too late as Cotuit closed the door to give Derik Olvey (Notre Dame) the victory.
